Role Overview & Responsibilities

The role

The post holder will be part of a dynamic new team led by Dr Pires. Work in this laboratory focuses on expanding the understanding of tumour hypoxia biology and its implication for tumourigenesis, therapy and metastatic spread. There is a particular interest in exploring hypoxic biology therapeutically in the context of radiotherapy resistance, as well as novel radio-sensitising strategies.

The person appointed will contribute to a range of project-specific research activities including the running and troubleshooting of in vitro radiobiology and hypoxia projects, the development and validation of novel hypoxia and radiobiology models. They should have experience of working in a clinical or laboratory setting, and have extensive relevant laboratory experience in cancer biology and/or molecular cell biology.

The role is fixed term for 2 years from July 2023.

The position offers a fantastic opportunity for a well-motivated individual with an excellent scientific knowledge base and an enthusiasm for fundamental and translational research to develop research within a multidisciplinary team in this rapidly growing, exciting field of research. Applicants will have, or will be about to obtain, a relevant PhD in a relevant biological subject and will have extensive knowledge surrounding cancer cell and molecular biology techniques. You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and can manage your time effectively to meet deadlines. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently with a high degree of attention to detail to support the objectives of the laboratory.

Other ideal skills include:

  • Working knowledge of cancer biology and the essentials of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, proteomics, or cell biology.
  • Flexible approach to dealing with research problems as they arise.
  • Ability to evaluate complex data.
  • Competent computer skills.
